We are experts in the transportation industry and small business

Archer Accounting Services, founded in 2022 by former truck driver turned bookkeeper, Missy Boothe, specializes in bookkeeping and tax preparation services for small businesses. Missy's firsthand experience in juggling financial record-keeping and business growth inspired her to start the company with the goal of helping small businesses and independent truck operators focus on growing their businesses. The idea began when a fellow truck driver asked for my help understanding his pay settlements. When we started working with him, it became clear that he was being charged way too much to manage his finances and getting little in return. That's when we offered to take over his bookkeeping and Archer was born. We are here to help business owners across the U.S. in any industry manage their finances and prepare their taxes. Let us handle the books, while you focus on what you do best.

Mileage logs are an essential part of trucking operations. They are used to track the miles driven by a truck, which is critical for several reasons, including fuel consumption, tax purposes, and compliance with regulations. Maintaining accurate mileage logs can be challenging, but it is essential for truck operators. In this article, we will discuss some best practices for maintaining mileage logs. Use electronic logs One of the most effective ways to maintain accurate mileage logs is by using electronic logs. Electronic logs make it easy to record and track mileage data automatically. These logs also provide an accurate record of the miles driven, the location, and the time spent on the road. Electronic logs can be used on a smartphone, tablet, or computer, making them easily accessible and convenient for truck operators. Keep receipts Another essential aspect of maintaining accurate mileage logs is keeping receipts for all expenses related to the truck. This includes fuel, maintenance, repairs, and other expenses. Keeping receipts allows you to calculate the cost per mile, which is important for tracking expenses and preparing tax returns. You can also use the receipts to verify the accuracy of the mileage logs and make adjustments as needed. Record all miles It's essential to record all the miles driven by the truck, including personal and non-work-related trips. This is important because non-work-related miles cannot be claimed as business expenses. By recording all the miles, you can calculate the total miles driven and the miles driven for business purposes, making it easier to claim the tax deduction for business-related miles. Record the purpose of each trip When recording mileage, it's essential to record the purpose of each trip. This helps to verify the accuracy of the mileage log and make adjustments as necessary. For example, if you drove to a customer site to make a delivery, you would record the purpose of the trip as a business-related trip. Review mileage logs regularly It's important to review your mileage logs regularly to ensure that they are accurate and up to date. This includes reviewing the electronic logs and the receipts to ensure that all the miles and expenses have been recorded accurately. Regular review of the logs can help to identify errors and make necessary corrections before they become a problem. Maintaining accurate mileage logs is a core part of trucking operations. Using electronic logs, keeping receipts, recording all miles, recording the purpose of each trip, and reviewing logs regularly are some of the best practices for maintaining accurate mileage logs. By following these practices, truck operators can ensure that their logs are accurate and compliant with regulations, making their operations more efficient and effective.

As an independent truck driver, you are responsible for managing your own taxes. This can be a daunting task, but with a little bit of knowledge and preparation, you can save money and avoid any tax-related headaches. Here are the top five tax tips for independent truck drivers. 1. Keep Accurate Records Keeping accurate records is essential for any business, and independent truck driving is no exception. You should keep a detailed record of all your expenses, including fuel, repairs, maintenance, insurance, and other related costs. These records will be useful when it comes time to file your taxes and can help you maximize your deductions. 2. Take Advantage of Tax Deductions One of the benefits of being an independent truck driver is the ability to claim tax deductions for business-related expenses. This can include everything from fuel and maintenance costs to meals and lodging while on the road. Be sure to keep detailed records of all your expenses so that you can take advantage of as many deductions as possible. 3. Understand Per Diem Rates Per diem rates are daily allowances that independent truck drivers can claim for meals and incidental expenses while on the road. These rates can vary based on the location and the time of year. Be sure to understand the per diem rates and keep accurate records of your expenses so that you can claim the appropriate deductions. 4. Use Tax Software Tax software can be a useful tool for independent truck drivers, especially if you're not comfortable doing your own taxes. There are many tax software options available, and they can help you save time and money by identifying all the deductions you're entitled to. 5. Hire a Tax Professional If you're still unsure about your tax situation or need additional guidance, consider hiring a tax professional who specializes in working with independent truck drivers. They can help you navigate the complex tax laws and regulations and ensure that you're taking advantage of all the deductions you're entitled to. Being an independent truck driver comes with its own set of tax challenges. However, by keeping accurate records, taking advantage of tax deductions, understanding per diem rates, using tax software, and hiring a tax professional, you can save money and avoid any tax-related headaches. With a little bit of knowledge and preparation, you can make tax season a breeze.
